Animated Short

More updated art for the Roaches - this time with a clearly formatted style for the titles.

Hi, guys. I want to let you know that there have been some developments for an animated version of my book. I've been talking to animators, voice talent and an animation studio in Toronto about an animated short. I'm happy to report that this is going really well.

Title art and below is what is called a "turn-around" showing all sides of the character. In this case, The Grand Roach - the pompous leader of the roaches. I have a few more of these character sheets to finish and then I will be able to move on and get some motion tests together.



Once more motion tests are put together I will post them in order to decide on a direction for the rest of the short. Stay tuned for more on animation news for Roaches.

In the meantime, I'm getting several more character sheets together with a wide variety from the insect world of roaches including Ampluex Wasps - the roaches natural predator in the wild, Pill bugs which work as messengers in the insect kingdom, and a few new roaches species including Blaberus Giganteus and Aptera Fusca.

There is a huge variety in the insect kingdom. I am really surprised how little animated entertainment deals with bugs. I can think of two movies in the last 20 years and only three in the last 60 years.

All of the pre-production is completed. The script, the voice acting, rough audio mix and a tight animatic with two sets of credits are all finished up. Done.

I must say that the performance by Toronto based actor Julian Mulock turned out to surpass all of my expectations for this short. His contribution has made the monologue ooze with personality and character. Really remarkable.

Now, I'm busy using my own methodology to "dope-sheet" out the voice overs and find the best animation software for this project. I may end up using Flash for most of the short and then use After effects for the exteriors and to "bump up" the titles.

Two things are holding up production. I need 1 to 2 more animators to help me rig and animate this bug rigs. When this short is completed I am planning on a film fest run and possible more in terms if distribution. Stick around!
